Zoloft Causing Bipolar Mania

Since the days are getting shorter and cloudier, I started taking antidepressants on top of the Seroquel to prevent the seasonal depression that often occurs in people bipolar.

I've taken Zoloft (Sertraline HCl) before, and I don't remember any problems. But this time...Wow! The stuff blasted me off into mania, or at least some pretty intense hypomania. I felt like I had drunk two pots of coffee. Had trouble falling asleep at night, woke up very early in the morning, racing thoughts, pressured speech...classic symptoms. This was just after ONE pill!

The second night that I tried to sleep, after taking Zoloft, I took and extra 1/2 Seroquel (which usually makes me VERY sleepy, an Advil PM, and nighttime cold medicine. That combo should have knocked me right out. Still couldn't sleep.

The drug did seem to make me feel happier and more social. So even with the sleep problems, I decided to try a 1/2 pill, instead of a whole one. Still feel totally beaned out and hyper. No more Zoloft for me!

Anyone else ever have anything like this happen? I know that antidepressants can induce mania, I've just never has it happen so suddenly and intensely.

  1. Celexa (for ocd) sent me into a mixed/manic episode. I gave it a few weeks until it got so bad I just couldn't take anymore. It pretty much started after taking it the first few days.

I now take Geodon, which is helping the mixed episode. A hopefully will help with the ocd.

    Boo :)

  2. I have used every strength of Zoloft known. I never really felt anything. Now I am taking Lithium 1500mg per day, Lamictal 100mg and Trazadone 150mg. The last few weeks I feel major roller coaster feelings. Maybe I should see about adding Zoloft for the season...

  3. I took Zoloft for five days last year. The first two days I felt so tired and comatose. Like I was underwater trying to swim to the top. I could barely keep my eyes open, and drank tons of coffee. Then, my arms, legs, and body started hurting and feeling like they were swelling with burning and tingling. So, I stopped taking it. After I stopped taking it I had a manic episode (didn't sleep for days/barely ate/had tons of energy) and would say that I had mental issues for about 6 mos. after ceasing to stop it. That was the first and only time I've ever taken an anti psychotic or anti depressant type of drug. Never again. I read that manic episodes are instigated by Zoloft in .03 percent of users.
